Shelby DeCatur, LLMSW

(She/Her/They/Them)

Hello there! My name is Shelby DeCatur and I wanted to introduce myself formally to the community of Flushing as well as Genesee and nearby counties. I have obtained my Master’s of Social Work through Saginaw Valley State University. I am a Tri-City area native and I have recently moved from Essexville. I am married and I have a cat, affectionately named Luna “Lu” S’Mores or a.k.a Toasted Marshmallow, and a bearded dragon named Rocko (glad my husband and I settled on Rocko - the other options were…silly to say the least).

I have always had a passion for the arts as well as for helping others. My original journey was to pursue a career in Art Therapy, however, I realized not too far into that journey that it was not a highly desired form of service/degree - at least here in Michigan. That is how I found myself in social work - I am able to still help others while learning and being trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques such as Trauma Play, utilizing Tabletop RPGs (TTRPGs; like Dungeons and Dragons), and art-based therapy. My approach to therapy is that we all have experiences that make up our own individual, unique stories. Sometimes we can laugh at the things that have happened, sometimes we are frustrated, sometimes we cry, and even all the above. Healing is a journey and like any adventure, there are fun moments and bumps in the road. My aim in therapy is to remind clients of their strength, their resilience, but also empower - much of our life experiences that were traumatic or difficult to navigate affect how we interpret or interact with a variety of situations which can lead to difficulties with taking care of ourselves.

LaToya Lyons

Hello, I am a Clinical Therapist here at Nurturing Selves. I received my MSW from Michigan State University in 2018, and shortly after, received my Limited License. I have a passion for helping people process their trauma and problem solve tough situations in a healthy way. I provide a warm welcoming, and non-judgmental environment. I create a safe space and allow you to freely express any emotion that may surface. I have experience working with children, teens, and families within the child welfare system. I have helped many clients with a variety of mental health diagnoses such as Bipolar & Depression, Schizophrenia, Anxiety, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, Substance Abuse and Borderline Personality Disorder. I have worked with several children and teens with behavioral concerns and diagnoses. The therapy approaches include Trauma Play Therapy, and CBT. I am also a strength-based Clinician who will continue to highlight the positive in you, even if you do not recognize those positive characteristics within yourself. If you or your child is in need of walking the road to healing, I encourage you to join our family, here at Nurturing Selves.

"Life is about using the whole box of crayons"- Ru Paul

Regardless of the color or how broken they appear, crayons can always be restored and brought back to their original foundation. In the same way that we humans do, it provides them with the ability to continue on by creating a beautiful blend and forming a harmonious unity that transcends individual differences. When you and I collaborate, we will begin merging colors and producing a mesmerizing symphony of hues. It is a visual spectacle that evokes awe and wonder. It reminds us of the inherent beauty of diversity and collaboration power held within you.

I am a highly trained, passionate, and dedicated advocate with over six years' professional experience as a clinical social worker. I have an extensive background working directly with foster care youth and their families, biological and/or foster parents alike. I have experience in Applied Behavior Analysis, which is the therapeutic intervention used with those diagnosed with autism. Along with working with individuals or those who live(d) with someone already diagnosed/struggling to cope with the following: Substance abuse, Addiction, Power/Control dynamics, Personality Disorders, ADHD, ODD, Human Trafficking and/or Sexual Abuse, Parent/Child relationship(s) and so much more!

China Davis, MSW Intern

My name is China Davis, and I am an MSW intern at Arizona State University. I have experience working with children and their families for over 13 years as a Preschool Teacher. I am a very driven and goal-oriented individual who has a strong desire to help others, and with gratitude, I embrace this as my life’s path and professional journey. I’ve realized small acts of kindness and help can go a long way, and I love doing this without expecting anything in return. I hope that, in any way, I can pay it forward and help people heal and move past whatever challenges or traumas hindering them from becoming the best person they can be.
